Does a New Car Need Ceramic Coating or PPF?

Does a brand-new car need ceramic coating or PPF?

A new car benefits enormously from paint protection — but the right choice depends on how you'll use it. Choose ceramic coating for gloss, easier washing and chemical resistance; choose PPF for physical protection against stone chips. Either way, the paint needs correcting first, because around 95% of new cars arrive with defects. Many owners choose both: PPF on the front end, ceramic coating everywhere.

Start here: correct the paint first

This is non-negotiable and it's where dealer offerings fall down. New cars carry holograms from dealer polishing, wash marring from transport washes and light scratches from pre-delivery inspection. Protection applied over defects seals them in — you'd be preserving someone else's mistakes. Our new-car paint correction and protection package always starts with machine polishing the paint to a defect-free finish. Only then does protection go on.

Choose ceramic coating if…

  • You want the car to look its best with the least effort — deep gloss and water that beads and sheets off.
  • Easier washing matters: dirt releases with less agitation, so future washes are quicker and safer.
  • You want chemical resistance against bird droppings, tar, iron fallout and tree sap.
  • Stone chips aren't your main worry — you don't do big motorway miles.

Choose PPF if…

  • You commute on the M6, M62 or M56 — stone chips are a certainty, and only film stops them.
  • The car is high-value, and a respray would be costly and disruptive.
  • It's a lease or PCP car and you want to avoid end-of-lease paint charges.
  • You plan to keep the car for years and want the paint preserved, not just glossed.

The combination: PPF + ceramic coating

The most complete new-car package is both: PPF on the high-impact areas (bonnet, bumper, wings, mirrors) where stones strike, and a ceramic coating over the film and the rest of the car. The film handles impacts; the coating adds hydrophobics, gloss and easy washing across the whole car — including over the film itself.

What to skip

Dealer-applied paint protection. It's usually a basic sealant applied quickly over uncorrected paint at a premium price — a fraction of what an independent detailer delivers. The complimentary dealer wash. Decline it; it's a leading cause of new-car swirls. Ask for the car unwashed and bring it to us instead.

Budgeting for new-car protection

We don't publish fixed prices, because no two cars cost the same to protect — but here's what moves the number, so you can budget realistically:

  • Vehicle size. A small hatchback takes less time and material than a large SUV.
  • Paint condition. A car with heavy dealer holograms needs more correction time than one with light marring.
  • Coverage. Partial-front PPF costs less than full-front; full-body is the premium option. Ceramic coatings vary by tier.
  • Paint type. Soft black paint corrects quickly; hard paint takes longer. Matte and satin finishes need specialist approaches.

The way to get an accurate figure is to send us photos on WhatsApp (07482 225323) with the make, model and year — or better still, arrange an assessment before collection day.

Questions to ask any detailer before you book

Whether you choose us or someone else, these questions separate the professionals from the pretenders:

  1. Will you measure my paint thickness before correcting? (The answer should be yes.)
  2. What preparation is included before the coating or film goes on?
  3. Which brand and tier of coating or film are you applying — and what does the manufacturer say about durability?
  4. Can I see the installation environment? (PPF needs a clean, controlled space.)
  5. What aftercare do I need to follow, and will you put it in writing?

Any detailer worth booking will welcome these questions. If the answers are vague, walk away — your new car's paint deserves better.

When to book

Ideally before you collect the car. Tell us the make, model and collection date, and we'll plan correction and protection around it — the goal is for the car to go from the dealership to protected without ever meeting a wash brush. Call 07933 498857 or WhatsApp 07482 225323 to arrange it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I get paint protection straight away on a new car?

Yes — the sooner the better. A new car's paint is at its best on day one (after correction of delivery defects), and every unprotected week adds wash damage. Book before collection if you can.

Is dealer-applied paint protection worth it?

Usually not. Dealer-applied sealants are typically basic products applied quickly over uncorrected paint, at premium prices. An independent detailer corrects the paint first and applies professional-grade protection.

Can PPF and ceramic coating be combined on a new car?

Yes — it's the most complete new-car package: PPF on the high-impact front end against stone chips, ceramic coating over everything for gloss and easy washing.

Does a new car need paint correction before protection?

In most cases, yes. Around 95% of new cars have minor defects from factory, transport or dealer prep. Protection locks in whatever's underneath — so correct first.
