Level 2 Paint Correction: Two-Stage Polish Explained

By Alex, Improve Details Β· Published 2 September 2026 Β· Last updated 5 October 2026

What is a Level 2 paint correction?

A Level 2 paint correction is a two-stage machine polish. Stage one uses a cutting compound to remove defects from the clear coat β€” swirl marks, holograms, wash marring and light scratches. Stage two uses a finishing polish to refine the paint, restoring deep gloss and clarity. It is the sweet spot for cars with moderate to heavy defects that a single-stage enhancement can't fully fix.

How a two-stage correction works, step by step

A proper Level 2 correction is methodical. Here's what happens at our Lilford Street studio in Warrington:

  1. Safe wash and decontamination. The car is washed carefully, then treated for iron fallout and tar, and clayed. You can't correct paint that's still contaminated β€” polishing over embedded particles just drags them across the panel.
  2. Paint thickness measurement. Every panel is measured in microns with a paint thickness gauge. This tells us how much clear coat we have to work with and where to be cautious β€” resprayed panels and edges get extra care.
  3. Test spot. We polish a small, representative section first to dial in the right combination of compound, pad and machine. This is how we confirm what level of correction your paint will actually achieve before touching the whole car.
  4. Stage one β€” cutting. Using a dual-action (DA) or rotary polisher with a cutting compound and cutting pad, defects are levelled out of the clear coat. This is the heavy lifting: swirls, holograms and oxidation are removed, but the finish is left slightly hazy.
  5. Stage two β€” finishing. A finishing polish on a soft polishing pad refines the paint, removing the micro-marring left by the cutting stage and bringing out deep, wet-looking gloss.
  6. Panel wipe and inspection. Panels are wiped down with a panel wipe/IPA solution to remove polishing oils, then inspected under dedicated inspection lighting so nothing is hidden and nothing is missed.

What defects does Level 2 correction remove?

Two-stage correction permanently removes defects β€” it levels the clear coat rather than hiding marks with fillers. It deals with:

  • Swirl marks and spider webbing β€” the fine circular scratches left by poor washing, visible in sunlight.
  • Holograms and buffer trails β€” the wavy, oily-looking marks left by a rotary polisher in unskilled hands, often from dealer preparation.
  • Wash marring β€” light marking from sponges, brushes and automatic car washes.
  • Light scratches β€” marks confined to the clear coat that don't catch your fingernail.
  • Oxidation β€” dull, faded paint where UV has degraded the surface, common on older or neglected cars.
  • Water spots and etching β€” mineral deposits and the marks left by bird droppings that have etched into the clear coat.

What a Level 2 correction can't fix

Honesty matters here. Correction is limited by clear-coat thickness β€” there is only a finite amount of clear coat, and cutting past the safe limit risks striking through to the colour coat. Deep scratches (RIDS β€” random isolated deep scratches) that reach the colour coat or primer can be improved and made far less visible, but not fully removed. Stone chips need touch-up paint, not polishing. And single-stage paint on classic cars behaves very differently from modern clear-coat systems, so it needs its own assessment.

"Most cars that come to us for a Level 2 have years of wash damage. The test spot is the moment of truth β€” it shows the owner exactly what their paint is capable of before we commit to the full car."

Level 1 vs Level 2 vs Level 3: which do you need?

Paint correction stages compared
StageWhat it doesBest for
Level 1 (single-stage enhancement)One polishing step; removes light swirls and restores glossLightly marked cars, pre-sale preparation, pre-coating prep on good paint
Level 2 (two-stage correction)Cutting stage plus finishing stage; removes moderate to heavy defectsSwirled, hazy or oxidised paint; the most popular full correction
Level 3 (multi-stage correction)Additional cutting/refining steps for the most defected paintHeavily neglected paint or show-level finishes where the clear coat allows it

Who is Level 2 correction for?

It's for drivers who want their paint genuinely restored, not just glossed over β€” enthusiasts with swirled daily drivers, owners preparing a car for ceramic coating or paint protection film, and anyone whose car looks dull and tired despite being washed regularly. If your paint only has light marking, a 1-stage machine polish may be all you need β€” we'll tell you honestly after seeing the car.

When NOT to choose Level 2 correction

If your paint is already in good condition with only light wash marks, Level 2 is more than you need and a single-stage enhancement will get you there for less. If the car has very thin clear coat or widespread deep scratches, chasing perfection isn't safe or sensible β€” we'll explain what a realistic result looks like. And if stone chips are your main complaint, correction won't help; that's a job for touch-up paint or PPF.

Every Level 2 correction at Improve Details starts with an honest assessment. Send photos of your car on WhatsApp (07482 225323) or call 07933 498857 and we'll tell you which level your paint actually needs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Level 2 paint correction take?

It depends on vehicle size, paint hardness and how defected the paint is. A two-stage correction is typically a multi-day job because each panel is cut, refined and inspected. Ask us for a realistic timescale when you get a quote.

Is Level 2 correction safe for thin or soft paint?

Yes, when it's measured properly. We check paint thickness in microns on every panel with a paint thickness gauge and work within the safe limits of the clear coat. Soft paint corrects easily; hard paint simply needs more time.

Will Level 2 correction remove all scratches?

It removes swirls, holograms, wash marring, oxidation and light scratches. Deep scratches that reach the colour coat (RIDS) can usually only be improved. We confirm what's achievable with a test spot before you commit.

Should I protect the paint after a Level 2 correction?

Yes β€” correction reveals fresh, defect-free paint that deserves protection. Most customers follow a Level 2 correction with a ceramic coating or paint protection film so the finish stays that way.
